2025 Highlights from across the Carr Gomm Community

2025 was an amazing year for Carr Gomm, supporting over 4,000 people across Scotland and providing over 1 million hours of direct support.

This year has proven to be fantastic for showcasing exceptional progress and achievements for the people we support and our staff. As we reflect on this past year, it’s important to highlight not just the challenges we’ve faced but also the remarkable successes that have defined our journey.

Check out a few highlights below from a great year.

Highlights from People We Support

Providing person centered support is at the heart of everything we do at Carr Gomm. Our Support Practitioners and staff work hard to ensure everyone is supported to fulfil their own dreams, passions and interests.

Here are a few highlights from people we supported across Scotland in 2025.

A Conversation with Katherine: A Life Well Lived

We had the privilege of sitting down with Katherine in her cosy bungalow in Tain, or as she quickly reminded us, “It’s a Royal Burgh!” – to hear about her life. Katherine grew up in Tain as an only child. At 16, she moved to Glasgow to spend time with her aunt, just as the world was changing around her. She recalled:

“I was in Glasgow in 1939, just about to start college. I was at church when the minister stood up and said, ‘We are at war.’ That was it, so I returned home.”

Breaking down barriers with the inaugural Forth Valley Sports Festival.

This summer, the inaugural Forth Valley Sports Day took place at The Peak in Stirling. The event provided people supported by Carr Gomm with the opportunity to try something new, offering an amazing range of accessible sports and activities.

John, who attended the festival, said, “It was good to see that they catered to people with mental health problems and learning disabilities – and they were actually participating.”

The Forth Valley Sports Festival was a huge success, with one participant even deciding to join their local rugby club!

Celebrating Burns Night in Dunoon

Our Dunoon service had a fantastic afternoon celebrating Burns Night! Burns Night takes place on the 25th January each year to celebrate the legacy of Scotland’s National Bard, Robert Burns. It is a time to feel connected to Scotland and each other, and to enjoy good food and conversation.
Staff and people we support came together in Dunoon and enjoyed a fantastic feast of sandwiches, haggis balls and cake, poetry read by the one and only Arthur French and – most importantly – great conversation and company. Events like this remind us how important connection and community are, and we’re so grateful to our amazing staff for their hard work making the day possible!

People we support across Scotland enjoyed great days out at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Edinburgh in August is unlike anywhere else, and people we support wanted to get in on the action!

Sean, Alan, Hope, Donna and Sara all enjoyed amazing days out in the city, soaking in the atmosphere and seeing truly incredible shows. Each day was tailored to their individual loves and interests to make every day special!

Influencing Change

At Carr Gomm, we are committed to using our experience and expertise to influence good change for people accessing social care.

Read a few of the highlights from 2025 below.

Minister for Social Care visits Carr Gomm

We welcomed Tom Arthur MSP to Carr Gomm to discuss how we can unlock the potential of the social care sector.
We agreed on the need for a constructive conversation across all of society on what we want the future of social care to look like. We also discussed the impact of UK and Scottish Government policies, including the importance of overseas worker sponsorship to our organisation, as well as the ongoing effects of the current adult social care wage and the recent rise in Employer National Insurance Contributions.

Making an impact at the COSLA Conference 2025

We embraced the opportunity to showcase our impact in communities across Scotland. Through our exhibition stall and our conversations with delegates, we demonstrated our ability and willingness to be solution-focused. By highlighting our Responder and Mental Health Pathways services and our approach to providing support that enables people to ‘Come Home’ to their communities, we celebrated our ability to work creatively to develop and deliver innovative community-based social care services.

MSP Jenni Minto Visits Community Contacts

We were delighted to welcome Jenni Minto, Constituency MSP for Argyll & Bute to our Community Contacts service earlier this month. During her visit, Minister Minto spent time with our team, hearing firsthand about how we support people across Argyll & Bute and Highland with Self-Directed Support (SDS).

Sector Leaders Urge First Minister to Act on Rising Costs Threatening Social Care

Carr Gomm joined five other major social care charities in writing to the First Minister, urging the Scottish Government to take immediate action on the rising costs threatening Social Care caused by the increase in Employer National Insurance Contributions (eNIC).

Stephanie’s Journey: Building a Career in Social Care with Carr Gomm

Leaving school can feel like a leap into the unknown. For Stephanie Graham, now a Lead Practitioner with Carr Gomm, it was both exciting and nerve-wracking.
“When I left school, I found the step into working life exciting, but I was also very nervous about the unknown. I was a teenage mum and already mature for my age; however, nothing prepares you for that step. Luckily, I had the best colleagues who made this transition so easy and supportive, and they guided me well to become the care worker I am today.” – Stephanie

Daniel’s Career Story as a Relief Support Practitioner

When Daniel joined Carr Gomm as a Relief Support Practitioner, he had no experience in the sector, but the positive experiences he had and his wonderful colleagues inspired him to further his education and continue to develop and improve as a Support Practitioner.
“Prior to Carr Gomm, I didn’t have any experience working in the care sector, but I found almost immediately that the people we work with were dead open about sharing what they know about the business and how best to care for people and then two years later, I decided that I wanted to take that further.” Daniel, Relief Support Practitioner

International Collaborations

It was a great year for our International Collaborations programme, with many Global Ambassadors going abroad to conferences and study trips. We were also lucky to welcome individuals from other organisations to Carr Gomm so that we could share our knowledge and experience.

Here are a few highlights from our International Collaborations programme in 2025.

Head of Operations for EASPD visited us

We are excited to have recently joined EASPD – European Association of Service providers for Persons with Disabilities. This week, we enjoyed welcoming Rachel Vaughan, Head of Operations for EASPD, to our National office in Edinburgh.
It was a great opportunity to share the work and impact that Carr Gomm has, and we look forward to developing our partnerships and sharing and learning through this connection.

Leanne looks back on her experience, takeaways and learnings from the EASPD Conference in Turin, Italy

“Attending the EASPD conference in Turin this October was both inspiring and motivating, offering fresh perspectives on how we support individuals and families. The theme, “Empowering families, enabling self-determination: Rethinking support at every life stage,” aligns closely with our values at Carr Gomm, and it was a privilege to represent our organisation. For anyone working in social care, disability services, or community support, I highly recommend exploring EASPD’s work. The conference was a powerful reminder of the impact we can make when we learn, reflect, and collaborate.”
– Leanne, Global Ambassador

Katrina reflects on her time in Cologne as part of the EASPD art and culture study visit

“I’m so thankful to have been able to attend the European Association of Service providers for Persons with Disabilities (EASPD) study visit to Cologne last week through Carr Gomm’s International Collaborations project.

The trip was an amazing opportunity to connect with other participants from across Europe and to meet organisations in Cologne that advocate for people with disabilities in the arts. It was a truly inspiring experience. I loved hearing about these incredible organisations, connecting with the other participants, gaining valuable knowledge and experience to bring back to Carr Gomm.”

– Katrina, Global Ambassador

We are so proud of everything the people we support and our staff have achieved in 2025, and we cannot wait to see what 2026 brings!
