Celebrating World Autism Acceptance Month

At Carr Gomm, we’re proud to celebrate the talents, achievements, and contributions of autistic people while fostering understanding and acceptance. This World Autism Acceptance Month, we’re spotlighting inspiring stories and highlighting how person-centred support can make a lasting difference in people’s lives.

Creating environments where everyone can thrive is at the heart of what we do, and our approach ensures that each person we support has the opportunity to live life on their own terms. Here, we share the journeys of Rian and James – two inspiring people thriving with the right support.

Rian’s Story – A Home of His Own

‘You want somebody to live their life and have all these experiences – which we can support with. All the things that these people said that Rian would never be able to do, we supported him to do.’

Craig Purves, Service Manager

Rian’s journey is an inspiring example of how person-centred support can empower people to overcome challenges and achieve milestones previously thought impossible. With innovative care and relentless dedication, Rian’s support team played a significant role in helping him transition to his new home.

The team went above and beyond to understand Rian’s needs, preferences, and goals, tailoring their approach to ensure he felt empowered every step of the way. Their efforts not only resulted in positive outcomes for Rian but also earned them the accolade of “Team of the Year.”

Watch the video below to hear directly from Rian’s team, sharing their experiences and the profound impact of their approach.

James’ Story – Achieving New Goals

James is another shining example of how tailored support can transform lives. Diagnosed with autism at 59, James is now, for the first time, experiencing a life that feels authentically his own.

Since moving into his first independent home in Stirling in 2017, James’ life has flourished. Despite past struggles, James has created a space that reflects his personality – a space where he feels secure, proud, and happy.

The team’s calm, compassionate, and adaptive approach has enabled James to communicate his needs effectively and manage his anxieties with greater ease. His sister summed it up perfectly when she said, “James is doing things both he and his family never thought would be possible.”

Supporting Acceptance

We believe that everyone has the right to live a fulfilling and empowered life. Stories like Rian’s and James’s remind us of the importance of person-centred support in making those aspirations a reality.

We also believe in continuing to learn and grow as a team. Carr Gomm is proud to have the ATLAS Group (Autism Training, Learning and Support), which serves as a hub of resources and knowledge for effectively supporting autistic people.

If you’d like to know more about the innovative work we do through ATLAS, visit our website for further details. To explore autism support resources or deepen your understanding, we also recommend visiting the National Autistic Society website.
