Learning on the Job: An SVQ Experience in Social Care

For many people working in social care, completing an SVQ is a key step in building confidence and deepening their understanding of the role they already do so well.

Two of our Support Practitioners from our West of Scotland services have shared their experience of completing their SVQ in Health and Social Care, reflecting on both the journey and the impact it has had on their practice.

What is an SVQ in Health and Social Care?

Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs) are work-based awards. They are designed to recognise what you already know and do in your role, and to give you the opportunity to demonstrate how your practice connects to policies, procedures, and legislation.

For Support Practitioners, SVQs are a key part of meeting Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) registration requirements. They focus on delivering person-centred support, working safely, and building professional practice.

What makes SVQs different is that they are grounded in everyday work. Rather than learning in a classroom, colleagues build a portfolio of evidence through their day-to-day practice, demonstrating the skills and understanding they already bring to their role.

How we support staff to achieve their SVQ

We support our permanent Support Practitioners to achieve the qualifications required for their role, recognising the important level of responsibility they hold in supporting the people we work with.

Our in-house SVQ Assessors play a key role in supporting colleagues throughout their qualification journey. They provide guidance and assessment support, helping staff to reflect on their practice and gather evidence that demonstrates their competence, knowledge, and values in line with qualification requirements.

We also work in partnership with local colleges and training providers to ensure colleagues can access the qualifications and support required to achieve recognised professional standards within the sector.

Reflections from our Support Practitioners

“It gave me the opportunity to reflect on my practice and gain a deeper understanding of why we do things the way we do, rather than simply carrying out tasks as part of a routine.”

One Support Practitioner described how the process felt at the start: “At the beginning, I felt quite unsure about what was expected and how to approach the process. However, my assessor was incredibly supportive, guiding me through each stage. Her support made a big difference, especially during times when I felt stuck.

“It was demanding at times, balancing the SVQ with shifts and home life. But it turned out to be a very positive experience. It gave me the opportunity to reflect on my practice and gain a deeper understanding of why we do things the way we do, rather than simply carrying out tasks as part of a routine.

“Completing my SVQ boosted my confidence a lot. It helped me recognise the skills and knowledge I already had. I feel more confident in my role and better equipped to support the individuals in my care. I’d definitely encourage others to take on the opportunity.”

“It allowed me to reflect on my practice daily and identify areas where I can continue to improve.”

A second colleague reflected on the deeper value of the process: “I understood the importance of all the training I’ve received as a Support Practitioner – and how it helps me deliver high-quality care, maintain professional standards, and ensure individuals are supported safely, respectfully, and effectively.

“It stood out as a time of reflection – on my practice, my values, and the way I provide support. It has been a positive experience and a reminder of how the skills I demonstrate every day make a real difference to the people I support.”

“I see the difference it makes to the people I support.”
