How Support Transformed Charley’s Life: Overcoming Homelessness and Building Independence

When life feels overwhelming, it can be hard to see a way forward. We meet people where they are, just like Charley:

A colorful mural depicting a row of stylized houses under a large rainbow. Above the rainbow are the questions "Fuel Poverty?", "Money Worries?", "Housing Issues?", "Addictions?", "Homeless?", "Health Problems?", "Stigma?", "Isolated?" In the center, a large umbrella labeled "Counseling Support" shields the path leading to the houses, suggesting protection against these issues.

From Struggle to Hope

“I had come through the care system. I was unable to do much on my own. I even struggled to leave my own house. I lacked confidence and I had extremely low self-esteem. I was very isolated and I honestly didn’t really believe that I had much of a future – believing that the way my life had turned out so far was it, and that it wasn’t ever going to get any better.”

Charley’s story began with many obstacles, but with support, things began to change.

Life-Changing Support

With the guidance of her Housing Support Worker, Ty, Charley started to rebuild her life.

The support I have received from Ty has been life changing – and I do not say that lightly. If I had not received the support I would not be where I am today. Through working with Ty I have gained confidence, have a higher self-esteem and a good sense of self-worth. Along with all of this Ty has helped me to connect with the community through attending forums and other events. Carr Gomm also helped me by getting me a laptop so that I can attend university remotely. Ty also helped me with a name change by deed poll, allowing me to be more comfortable with who I am and in myself.”

Thriving Through Independence

Today, Charley is thriving and pursuing her dreams:

I am able to lead a high functioning, busy life with complete independence and I have many exciting things on the horizon. I have almost completed a level 1 in psychology and counselling course with the Open University and I am currently enrolled on a level 1 Criminology course. Soon I will be attending a week-long summer school, away from home, at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland for an audition prep for acting. This is away from home for me so is a really big thing.
I also now have a volunteer job at the Red Cross shop in town – something I would have thought impossible a couple of years ago.
I will be forever grateful and thankful to Carr Gomm and Ty for all of the wonderful help and support they have given me.”

The Power of the Right Support

Charley’s story shows how the right support can make all the difference. If you, or someone you know, is homeless or at risk of homelessness, support is available across Argyll and Bute.
