Meet Paul Marshall, our new Deputy Chief Executive

Paul Marshall has been appointed Deputy Chief Executive at Carr Gomm, bringing more than two decades of experience in the social care sector, including over a decade with Carr Gomm.

From Relief Worker to Deputy Chief Executive

“I have always worked for third sector, not for profit social care organisations, starting as a relief worker in Glasgow in 2002,” Paul says. “Prior to joining Carr Gomm, I was managing a homeless/addiction crisis service in Glasgow. I felt that, for me, this role was a bit narrow.”

It was a conversation with a former manager who had gone on to work at Carr Gomm that changed his thinking. “A previous manager had worked for Carr Gomm, and I spoke to them about the organisation…I liked the fact that Carr Gomm had a greater variety of services, and the role of Operations Manager in Carr Gomm would seem to have offered more variety. I wasn’t wrong!”

Paul joined Carr Gomm as an Operations Manager in 2013. “I quite quickly got the chance to step up to Senior Operations Manager. This was a learning curve, and is a job I have greatly enjoyed now for 12 years or so.” More recently, he has also overseen the Business Services team. “This gave me a more organisational view of Carr Gomm, rather than just a single locality. This prepared me for a wider role, and so when the role of Deputy Chief Executive came up, it was one I was interested in. I have also worked with Andrew [CEO] for many years now, and felt we worked well together.”

Getting to Know Carr Gomm’s Services Across Scotland

Stepping into a new role means a period of transition, and Paul is looking forward to getting to know Carr Gomm’s services beyond the West of [Central] Scotland. “I am really keen to learn about our services outwith the West – from the Highlands, to Dundee, to the Borders, through Edinburgh and across to Argyll and Bute. I have a job I think to learn about the places, the people, and the services we offer. To increase my knowledge I think is the only way I can adequately support the colleagues who work in these services. It’s a big job – but I think it is the part I am most looking forward to.”

Shaping What Comes Next

“We have our own agency, our own ideas, and a huge amount of talent and creativity to make a difference.”

The timing lines up with an important moment for Carr Gomm too, as the current Strategic Plan draws to a close later this year. “It is quite a good time I think for this role to start… as towards the end of the year we come to the end of the current strategic plan, and thoughts turn to the new one. I think to have a role supporting the development of the new plan, harnessing ideas across the organisation, is exciting. Social Care can sometimes feel stuck – the external environment can constrain the sector, but we have our own agency, our own ideas, and a huge amount of talent and creativity to make a difference. Supporting this is a pretty great job if you ask me.”
