A wonderful day cycling in Dundee
Last month, our Dundee service hosted a brilliant Try Cycling event. Bringing together people we support, staff, and members of the local community for a fun and inclusive afternoon at the Caird Park velodrome.
The event was the idea of Graham, one of our Dundee team and a keen cyclist, who saw an opportunity to make cycling more accessible for everyone. After working with Dundee and Angus Cycle Hub to secure a set of reconditioned bikes, Graham didn’t want to simply hand them over; he wanted to create something more meaningful: a safe, welcoming space for people to try something new and feel supported while doing it.
And so Try Cycling was born!
Thanks to the amazing support of Dundee Dragons Wheelchair Sports Club, we were able to offer a wide range of bikes on the day -including four adaptive trikes- ensuring everyone could take part in a way that suited them. Whether it was hopping on a bike for the first time in years, watching from the sidelines, or catching up over a cuppa, there was something for everyone to enjoy.
The social side of the event was just as important as the cycling. With refreshments generously donated by Tesco Monifieth, the velodrome’s meeting space was a great place for conversation, encouragement and connection.
One of the most memorable moments came from Dianne, a person we support who wasn’t sure she’d feel able to take part. But after giving it a go, her response said it all: “I loved it!”
We’re already looking ahead to what’s next. Graham and the team are planning a regular cycling group that will explore local routes and landmarks, and we’re continuing our collaboration with Dundee Dragons to make sure people with reduced mobility are always included—every step (or pedal) of the way.
After such a wonderful day out, our team in Dundee are already planning the next event!
