Jessie joined the team in the midst of lockdown 2020. She brings tons of enthusiasm and a real drive to help us move our fundraising activity forward, after a year in which our quest to raise funds had to take a back seat. Here, we say hello to Jessie and find out a little more about about her.

Hi Jessie! Tell us a little bit about you?

Well, where to start! What a rollercoaster of a year! There is no doubt that I have learnt a great deal. When I started, I had no idea just how large and how much of an impact Carr Gomm has.

I graduated from the University of Stirling in 2018. After a short stint at a budget hotel firm, I knew that I wanted to work for a charity. My first role was for Edinburgh Science in its education team. This gave me experience, and ignited a passion for finding a role that contributed to real positive change in people’s lives. Carr Gomm turned out to be the perfect fit.

What kind of work do you do for the charity?

I work as a project officer, specifically focusing on fundraising. It’s a dream role for me, working for a dynamic and friendly team.

It's an exciting environment where I am encouraged to think freely and share my ideas. I support the full fundraising output. From sourcing grants and writing applications, to coming up with creative ideas to raise funds, and working with the marketing team to create campaigns that will help us reach new audiences. It's a hugely varied role.

Carr Gomm fundraises in order to fill the gaps in society; to provide support where no one else is. I do all I can to bring in the pennies that make our amazing projects a reality.

What’s been your favourite fundraising challenge to date? Why?

Fundraising for Carr Gomm by taking part in the virtual Kiltwalk was a highlight of mine. With my colleague Blaire, we raised £1270 for my newly founded Carr Gomm family. I am very proud of our efforts, and also immensely grateful to all our family, friends and colleagues who donated.

Why is fundraising important to an organisation like Carr Gomm? Tell us about a time when a donation has helped change the life of someone Carr Gomm supports?

Fundraising supports people and projects across the length and breadth of Scotland. There are many examples of how these vital funds make a difference to people’s lives. For example, in 2020, we provided funds to set-up a regular coffee morning in an Edinburgh community where social isolation was widespread. Feedback from locals who popped along for a coffee and a chat showed us that people were struggling, and initiatives like this really do make a difference.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. Take a peek at our news page to find out what else we've been up to.

What do you love about your job?

Working for an organisation that makes a real difference to people’s lives. Without Carr Gomm, who would provide support in the person-centred way we do? What strain would that cause on families, on the NHS, and society at large? I can’t imagine what the care environment in Scotland would look like without Carr Gomm. Now that I have seen the bigger picture, I can never un-see it. This makes me passionate about doing my job.
