Andrew is one of our incredible support practitioners. Here, he shares a little insight into an average day supporting people.

What are the main responsibilities of your role?

I support people with their medication, their finances, household tasks, and the best part, supporting people to have fun through social and leisure activities.

How has this role changed over the pandemic? What have you learned?

Since Covid-19 began, people supported have had fewer opportunities to socialise and enjoy leisure activities. It’s been really difficult for a lot of people. Safety has always been important, but we’ve learned even more about infection control measures, and about why safety is so very important.

The pandemic has reminded me not to take anything for granted, and to make the most of the life we have.

Have there been any highlights or an important moment that you would like to share about the last few months?

I have been inspired by people supported, and all the people who have stepped up to help in whichever way they could.

What motivates you to come to work every day?

I know that those we support rely on us to lead independent full lives. I find it motivating being able to support vulnerable people.

What do you like about Carr Gomm’s values and how does that reflect in your work?

I believe that openness, honesty, interdependence, honesty and choice should be a constant mind-set that we should all practice.

Describe a typical day with a person supported?

  • Supporting someone to make their own breakfast.
  • Helping someone to decide on what they’d like to achieve that week.
  • Having some fun! Painting a picture or listening to music.
  • Keeping healthy by supporting a person to keep fit.
  • Helping someone write their weekly shopping list, sticking to foods that are healthy and nutritious.
  • Making lunch together
  • Cleaning, washing and personal care
  • I support individuals with their finances and their medication if they would like that support. This is usually a portion of my typical day. Each person has a unique person-centred plan. We update this all the time and focus what a person needs and wants from their regular support.

How do you like to spend your time outside of work?

I like spending time with my family, playing the drums and cooking. It’s changed for us all at the moment. Hopefully soon, we’ll get back to doing the things we love.

Who inspires you?

My daughter.

What is your motto?

You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.
