What our support looks like

Kenny, a former labourer and bricklayer, has heart problems and describes himself as being a ‘loner’. He used to spend a lot of time at home alone, drinking out of boredom.

Since being introduced to our local community growing project and our dedicated project worker, Kenny has completely changed his daily routine. He now enjoys being outside, getting some exercise and looking at the birdlife in the garden.

The garden suits Kenny perfectly as he enjoys chatting with smaller groups of people but also values time alone; the garden provides him with opportunities for both, and the support of our project worker when he wants to engage interacting. He appreciates the trust placed in him as a key holder and being responsible for tools and equipment.

Joining his local garden project has been hugely positive for Kenny’s physical and mental health.

Being outdoors and getting more exercise has helped him lose weight and stop smoking, and spending time with others is helping him build relationships. Kenny is a great example of how we can tackle social isolation and loneliness.
