I joined Carr Gomm as a board member in November 2018. Prior to this, I worked towards the role by spending time with Carr Gomm as part of the Get on Board programme whilst studying at Edinburgh Napier University.

I believe the role of the board should be to steward Carr Gomm towards its vision. It’s important that we act in the best interests of the organisation, putting any personal interests aside.

On a practical level, this means fully engaging with board meetings by being prepared, adding to the discussion and offering reflections. Keeping up to date with developments in Scottish health and social care is an important part of fulfilling the role.

My motivation for joining the board is through respect for the individuals that I work with and desire to be a positive force for hope, acceptance and change. My mantra is “be the change you want to see” – not always easy, but worth striving towards.

I worked in the arts for a number of years before finding my passion working with people. As a support worker for adults with learning disabilities and other support needs, I learned from every individual I worked alongside.

This led me to training as a mental health nurse, a role in which I have found myself and my calling. A highlight so far has been coming runner up in the UK Cavell Nurses’ Community Award 2017.

The more I understand about Carr Gomm and the work it does, the more enthusiasm and respect I feel for the organisation. This for me is the highlight – connecting with an organisation that’s core values resonate with me. As a board member, I’m constantly learning and challenging myself to reflect and improve upon what I do.

I enjoy spending time with friends chatting over a coffee, walking or, more recently, knitting. Having moved to Shetland I’ve taken up colour work knitting and am proud to say I’ve just completed my first jumper! It’s proving to be pretty addictive.
