Futures provides a space for everyone at Carr Gomm to provide ideas that may improve the work that we do for our services, the people supported, and staff members. It is about listening to everyone’s ideas, no matter how small, and coming together to make a difference.

Becs submitted a Futures idea to promote telephone support by creating training material. She shares with us some of her motivations for taking part in Futures.

There are no limits to the number of ideas someone can submit. The Futures Group is set up to take all suggestions into consideration, and they assess the most effective ways to implement each idea. This was not Bec’s first idea submitted, and last year she suggested having a day in the month to celebrate colleague successes. Bec encourages anyone with an idea to give it a go.

Becs' Story

What motivated you to come up with the idea for training materials for a Futures idea?

“I worked as a Nurse Advisor for NHS Direct in Hampshire and Isle of Wight between 2000 and 2004 and had received extensive training there in how to assess advice and support people over the phone. Move forward to the beginning of 2020, I reflected on how I had taken this for granted- I’d forgotten about the training as the skills I developed had become second nature.

“The lockdown came, and we had to work in new ways for some of us, this meant that all of our work was offered remotely and this included Community Contacts. I knew I had to support my colleagues and to share my learning and as so much more of Carr Gomm’s work would be remote, I shared my idea to develop a simple training tool to help my colleagues grow their skills and to be more confident about supporting people by phone, email and via videoconferencing.”

Has there been any impact, if so, what have you noticed?

“The Community Contacts teams have shared that they have found the training valuable that this has helped them feel more confident and prepared to support and advise people by phone.”

How would you encourage other team members to get involved in Futures idea?

“If you have an idea that you think might help the people we support, your service or Carr Gomm, share it! There is no such thing as a silly idea. A team of eager and positive people supports you. Go for it!”
