I started working for Carr Gomm in Edinburgh in June 2020, and after moving to Cupar, transferred to the Dundee service. I was initially with the visiting team and now work full time with a supported living service.

A friend recommended working for Carr Gomm because it’s a great social work charity with excellent principles, and a reputation to match.

Prior to my employment with Carr Gomm, I had been working as a personal care assistant in Edinburgh for over 12 years. I have been interested in mental health for a long time, and becoming a support practitioner with Carr Gomm allowed me to use the skills and experiences I’d built up over multiple years working in the social care sector, while also learning more about the cognitive, behavioural, and emotional well-being of people supported. I enjoy working with people on a 1-1 basis and supporting them to live their lives to their full potential, achieving desired outcomes, and helping people to be as independent as possible.

My job allows me to make a positive impact on people’s mental and physical wellbeing. Even if it’s just making someone smile, it means a lot to me. Long-term goals are important, but it’s also the small steps achieved in helping people gain their confidence back.

I usually support over one person in a day. The support varies very much from person to person, and also from day to day. That’s what I like about my job. No one day at work is the same, and it makes one adapt to new situations and answer new challenges as they come. I always try to be proactive and use initiative and imagination to engage the people we support.

Everyone’s support is different, and this lies at the heart of Carr Gomm’s philosophy of a person-centred approach.  It’s about being sensitive to people’s needs, respecting their wishes while helping them to achieve their goals, and working with people as individuals

Right from the beginning of my employment with Carr Gomm I have felt and appreciated that everyone is treated fairly and with respect whether it is a person supported or a support practitioner.

Every day is unique in social care. For more information on career stories at Carr Gomm, visit: other career stories here: https://www.carrgomm.org/Blogs/career-stories
