Learning and Development

Learning & Development is overarching for us and we provide a range of  opportunities to support staff to do their job safely and effectively with our:

  • Learning & Development strategy
  • Learning & Development Portfolio
  • SQA Approved Centre
  • Information, Training and Consultancy services

Our Learning and Development (L&D) strategy is one of the key ways in which we ensure that our workforce has the knowledge, culture and necessary expertise to support vulnerable people. The Investors in People assessment review in 2010 also recognised the success of this.

We  invest in our staff through a range of structures, policies and procedures, which aim to ensure that staff feel confident, competent and well supported within their role. These include regular team meetings and Joint Reviews, an Annual Appraisal, Mentoring Groups for Service Managers as well as our Training Programmes.

Each member of staff is issued with their Learning & Development Portfolio to enable them to identify, record and evidence training and continuous professional development.

SQA Approved Centre

All our support staff are supported to attain their SVQ 2 or 3 qualification dependent upon their role. Managers are qualified at SVQ level 4 as well as the appropriate management qualification such as the Leadership and Management Certificate.  Our Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) Approved Centre is reviewed each year by a SQA External Verifier to ensure we maintain quality standards and that our SVQ & Training Managers work consistently.

We have a number of Information, Training & Consultancy services who oversee the development and delivery of specific topics.  These groups are accredited to develop and deliver training to staff on these specialist topics.  These include:

  • Autism
  • We use a British Institute of Learning Disabilities (BILD) Accredited positive  behaviour support methodology to deliver training.
  • Person Centred Approaches
  • Applied Suicide Intervention Skills training (ASSIST)
  • Wellbeing and Recovery
  • Scottish Mental Health First Aid (SMHFA)
  • Learning & Development Group

Our extensive knowledge of working with people with a wide range of mental health problems and provision of specialist training ensures that our workers are competent and capable. This includes training in ASSIST (Suicide prevention), Mental Health First Aid, Self-Harm, Adult Abuse and Addictions.
