Carr Gomm’s Fundraising Adventures so far……….

The Kili Climb

On Valentine’s Day 2013 Carr Gomm’s first fundraising adventure kicked off when 25 intrepid souls headed off to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. The plan; to raise £25,000 to change the lives of people supported. Although no-one knew it at the time, it would turn out to be an equally life changing experience for all the ‘Kili Climbers’.

On day six of the climb the summit was reached.  Andrew, one of our 25, told us:

“Nothing can describe the wonderful feeling of standing at the top of Africa.  The physical effort to get there was immense.  Raising tens of thousands of pounds was excellent.  But my strongest memories are of the indefatigable spirits that walked with me; the friendship bonds that were strengthened; and the wonderful comradeship we shared.“

An incredible £40,000 was raised by our Killi climbers, far exceeding their original target.  The money raised changed the lives of people including Wilf and Sean from our Falkirk services who were able to experience sailing for the first time at Muirshiel Park in Glasgow.

The Sahara Slog

With the euphoria of the Kili Climb fresh in everyone’s mind, Carr Gomm’s next fundraising challenge was conceived.   This time our fabulous fundraisers were crossing a desert rather than climbing a mountain, and not just any desert – the Sahara desert!

On Halloween 2014 our seven trekkers left Edinburgh bound for Morocco.  Nervous and excited, this was to be another test of mind and body.

Once in Morocco our trekkers set off across the desert on 1 November. As with the Kili Climb it was the experience of a lifetime for those taking part.

Willie, one of our trekkers, told us:

The trip was a real challenge and adventure, I’d recommend to everyone to try it at least once.  I wanted to support a local charity and give something back to the community.”

Our seven braved one of the most hostile environments on the planet and raised a fantastic £12,000.  Like the Kili Climbers before them their fundraising adventure  changed their lives and the lives of people throughout Scotland including in Argyll & Bute where fifty members of the local community came together on Christmas Day to celebrate.  For many who would have spent the day alone it was the perfect Christmas day:

“Thank you all... my day was filled with fun, purpose and meaning, a day I was dreading spending alone....well I was most certainly not alone, I really felt I ‘belonged’...”

The CG100

In the Spring of 2017, the CG100 campaign began.

The ethos was simple: 100 people each raising £500 to fund projects and activities around the country to tackle social isolation and loneliness.  We were thrilled by the commitment, contribution and imagination of the hundreds of fantastic fundraisers who took part.  From concerts to tarot reading, running to quiz nights our fundraisers took the CG100 campaign to their hearts.

We couldn’t have been more excited in January 2018 to announce that we had reached our £50,000 target! We are incredibly grateful to everyone who took part across the organisation and beyond.

Christine, from our Argyll and Bute Team, who fundraised through pop up shops told us:

“It was great to get together with colleagues away from work as well as raising the profile of Carr Gomm”.

The £50,000 raised through the CG100 will be used to fund vital community activities and projects throughout Scotland including our Social Committee in Falkirk and Stirling and a programme of summer activities for people supported in North East Glasgow to build friendships and confidence and tackle social isolation and loneliness.
